| The
Creative Approach
These short courses are held all the year round in our specially built and equipped workshops at the Old Hyde, Little Yeldham in the heart of the Essex / Suffolk countryside. Todays courses are ideal for beginners and students of all ages and abilities and are highly recommended for those testing the waters before buying a lathe and equipment. Over the two day period you will be able to learn this most satisfying craft through a combination of hands-on experience and individual tuition. We take a maximum of three students at any one time and throughout the course one of our lathes is set aside for your exclusive use. Our aim is to instill in you a sound approach that will bring out your creative flair. |

A Proud Tradition We have have been teaching the craft of woodturning for more than a quarter of a century. My father, Peter Child, was the first woodturner to offer this kind of course and in so doing transformed an almost forgotten craft into the popular hobby that it is today. The school he founded is respected both for its expertise and as a pioneer of more advanced and innovative turned work. |

Day
One
On the first day you will be able to make a large bowl, which will teach you the basic principles of gouge control. This is not an especially difficult skill to acquire but it is one that needs understanding if you are to get the best out of your wood turning. Sharpening tools correctly is a vital skill and as well as showing you how to obtain best results, we will be happy to instruct you in the sharpening of your old tools if you care to bring them along.

Day Two On the second day we concentrate on the methods of turning between the lathe centres, the holding of timber in chucks, long boring (for lamp bases), and polishing on the lathe. You can choose your own project for day two. Turning boxes or table lamps are among the most popular and everything you make you can take home with you. |

Health and safety precautions are especially important in the home workshop and we can show you how to rig up your own simple and effective dust extraction system. While you are here you will have easy access to a wealth of ancillary information. You can see how we go about timber conversion from the log, for instance, and how best to store your own timber. |

Many people have a relative or special friend who has shown an interested in woodturning but, for one reason or another, has never got round to taking it up. The latter may have seen it demonstrated at a craft fair and even had a go themselves or it may be an idea which has remained dormant since their first experience on the lathe at school. A woodturning course voucher as a Christmas or birthday present might be just what is needed to rekindle a long standing dream and turn it into action. |
